Bird Cave, also known as Areni-1 Cave, is located in Armenia’s Vayots Dzor Province, near the village of Areni, in the gorge of the Arpa River.
The cave is particularly famous for its remarkable archaeological discoveries. Excavations have uncovered numerous objects more than 6,000 years old, providing valuable information about the lives of the ancient inhabitants of the region.
One of the most famous discoveries is a leather shoe dating back around 5,500 years. It is considered one of the oldest preserved leather shoes ever discovered.
The cave also contains evidence of ancient winemaking, including grape seeds, grape remains, and structures used for wine production.
Researchers have also discovered traces of human hair dating back around 6,000 years, as well as household objects, organic materials, and animal remains.
Areni-1 Cave is important not only for Armenian archaeology but also for archaeology worldwide. It provides a fascinating glimpse into how people lived thousands of years ago, prepared food, practiced crafts, and produced wine.
Bird Cave is one of the most interesting historical sites in the Areni region. It is particularly valuable because the cave’s unique natural conditions allowed many archaeological remains to survive in exceptionally good condition.
