Haghpat Monastery
Why visit
Haghpat Monastery is one of the most famous medieval monastic complexes in Armenia. It is located in Lori Province, on a hill overlooking the Debed River gorge.
The monastery was founded in 976, during the period of the Bagratid Kingdom. Haghpat was not only a religious center but also an important educational and cultural center. A famous medieval school operated here, where theology, philosophy, literature, and the art of manuscript production were studied.
One of the main buildings of the complex is the Church of Surb Nshan, built at the end of the 10th century. The monastery also includes a gavit, chapels, a bell tower, and numerous khachkars, the traditional Armenian cross-stones.
One of the most impressive features of Haghpat is its location. The monastery is surrounded by the green mountains of Lori and offers beautiful views of the Debed Gorge.
In 1996, Haghpat and Sanahin Monasteries were inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List as outstanding examples of medieval Armenian architecture and culture.
