Ohanavank Monastery
Why visit
Hovhanavank Monastery is located in Armenia’s Aragatsotn Province, on the edge of the beautiful Kasagh River Gorge. It is one of Armenia’s important medieval monastic complexes.
The history of the monastery dates back to the early Christian period. According to tradition, part of the relics of Saint John the Baptist was kept here, which is associated with the monastery’s name.
The main church of the complex is Surb Karapet. The monastery also includes a gavit, other religious buildings, and numerous khachkars.
One of the most impressive features of Hovhanavank is its location. The monastery stands above the Kasagh Gorge and offers beautiful views of the cliffs, gorge, and surrounding mountains.
A visit to Hovhanavank can be especially interesting when combined with a trip to Saghmosavank and the scenic Kasagh Gorge.
