Destination
Tatev Monastery is one of Armenia’s most famous and historically significant monastic complexes. It is located in Syunik Province, on the edge of the Vorotan Gorge, surrounded by high mountains and beautiful natural scenery.
The monastery’s main church, Saints Paul and Peter, was built between 895 and 906. During the Middle Ages, Tatev was not only a spiritual center but also an important educational and scientific center. The University of Tatev operated here, where philosophy, theology, sciences, and other subjects were studied.
The monastery complex is also home to the famous Gavazan — the swinging column. According to tradition, the column could react to earthquakes and underground movements.
One of Tatev’s most remarkable features is its location. The monastery offers breathtaking views of the Vorotan Gorge and the mountains of Syunik.
Today, Tatev is one of Armenia’s most important tourist attractions. Many visitors reach the monastery by the Wings of Tatev cableway, which connects Halidzor with Tatev.
