Zvartnots, Cathedral of Saint Gregory the Illuminator

Why visit

Zvartnots Cathedral is located near Vagharshapat, in Armenia’s Armavir Province, not far from Yerevan. It is one of the most famous monuments of early medieval Armenian architecture and a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

The cathedral was built in the 7th century, between 643 and 652 AD, on the initiative of Catholicos Nerses III the Builder. Zvartnots was dedicated to Saint Gregory the Illuminator and was considered one of the most impressive buildings of its time.

The name “Zvartnots” is traditionally associated with the word “zvartun,” referring to heavenly or joyful spirits and angels.

Zvartnots was distinguished by its unique circular, centrally domed design. The cathedral had several levels and a tall central dome. Its columns and walls were richly decorated with stone carvings depicting grapevines, pomegranates, animals, and other ornaments.

According to historical sources, Zvartnots had a significant influence on the development of later Armenian and foreign architecture. Interestingly, Byzantine Emperor Constans II, who visited Armenia, was so impressed by Zvartnots that he wanted to build a similar cathedral in Constantinople.

The cathedral was destroyed around the 10th century, probably as a result of earthquakes and other historical events. For centuries, it remained buried underground until archaeological excavations began in the early 20th century.

Today, visitors can see the surviving columns, fragments of the walls, decorative stone carvings, and the archaeological site. There is also a museum next to the cathedral.

Zvartnots is a remarkable testament to the high level of Armenian architecture, culture, and construction during the 7th century.
