Amberd Fortress
Why visit
Amberd is one of Armenia’s most famous medieval fortresses. It is located in Aragatsotn Province, on the slopes of Mount Aragats, at an altitude of about 2,300 meters above sea level.
The name of the fortress is commonly interpreted as “fortress in the clouds.” Amberd was built in a strategically important location, near the junction of the Arkashen and Amberd rivers, and served as a powerful defensive center for centuries.
One of the most famous buildings in the complex is the Vahramashen Church, built in 1026 by Prince Vahram Pahlavuni. The fortress also preserves sections of defensive walls, towers, a bathhouse, and other medieval structures.
Amberd offers spectacular views of Mount Aragats and the surrounding gorges. Today, it is one of Armenia’s important historical, cultural, and tourist attractions.
A visit to Amberd can be especially enjoyable when combined with a trip to Lake Kari and Mount Aragats.
