Destination
Karahunj, also known as Zorats Karer, is one of Armenia’s most impressive archaeological sites. It is located in Syunik Province, near the town of Sisian, at an altitude of about 1,770 meters above sea level.
The site consists of hundreds of large stones, some of which have holes in them. Their exact purpose has not yet been conclusively established. There are different theories: some researchers associate them with ancient astronomical observations, while others believe they may have had ritual or funerary purposes.
The age of Karahunj is also a subject of scientific debate. Archaeological evidence indicates that the area was used during different historical periods.
Today, Karahunj is one of the important tourist attractions in Syunik and is often visited on trips to Sisian, Shaki Waterfall, and Tatev.
