Sanahin
Why visit
Sanahin Monastery is one of the outstanding monuments of medieval Armenian architecture. It is located in Lori Province, near the city of Alaverdi, in the picturesque Debed Gorge.
The monastery complex was mainly developed between the 10th and 13th centuries and was one of Armenia’s important religious, educational, and cultural centers during the Middle Ages. A renowned school operated here, where theology, philosophy, and other subjects were taught.
The complex includes the Churches of Surb Astvatsatsin and Amenaprkich, a gavit, a book depository, a bell tower, and other structures. The monastery is especially impressive for its intricate stone carvings and khachkars.
Sanahin and Haghpat Monasteries are jointly included on the UNESCO World Heritage List as exceptional examples of medieval Armenian monastic architecture.
Today, Sanahin is one of the most fascinating stops when exploring northern Armenia, combining history, architecture, and the beautiful landscapes of Lori.
