Saint Hripsime Church
Why visit
Saint Hripsime Church is located in Vagharshapat, near the Mother See of Holy Etchmiadzin. It is one of the most remarkable churches of early medieval Armenia and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
According to tradition, Saint Hripsime was a Christian virgin who came to Armenia from Rome together with Saint Gayane and other women. They refused to renounce their Christian faith and were martyred during the reign of King Tiridates III.
The present church was built in 618 AD during the time of Catholicos Komitas I Aghtsetsi. It is considered an outstanding example of classical Armenian architecture.
Saint Hripsime Church is known for its monumental and harmonious design. A large dome rises above the center of the church, while the interior creates a solemn and peaceful atmosphere.
The tomb of Saint Hripsime is located beneath the church and remains an important pilgrimage site.
