Saghmosavank Monastery
Why visit
Saghmosavank is one of Armenia’s well-known medieval monastic complexes. It is located in Aragatsotn Province, on the edge of the Kasagh River Gorge, near the village of Saghmosavan.
The main church of the complex, Surb Sion, was built in 1215, during the time of Prince Vache Vachutyan. Under the Vachutyan dynasty, Saghmosavank became an important religious, educational, and cultural center.
A school operated at the monastery, where clergy and scholars were educated. Numerous manuscripts were also created and preserved here.
One of the most impressive features of Saghmosavank is its location. The monastery stands high above the Kasagh Gorge, offering breathtaking views of the deep gorge, cliffs, and slopes of Mount Aragats.
Today, Saghmosavank is a popular tourist attraction in Armenia. It is especially worth visiting together with Hovhanavank and the Kasagh Gorge.
