Saint Gayane Church

Why visit

Saint Gayane Church is located in Vagharshapat, next to the Mother See of Holy Etchmiadzin. It is one of the most important churches from Armenia’s early Christian period and is included on the UNESCO World Heritage List.

The church was built in 630 AD by Prince Grigor Mamikonian in memory of Saint Gayane and her companions.

According to tradition, Saint Gayane was one of the Christian virgins who came to Armenia from Rome. She and the other women refused to renounce their Christian faith and were martyred during the reign of King Tiridates III in the early 4th century.

Saint Gayane Church is known for its simple, strict, and harmonious architecture. It has the distinctive domed design characteristic of Armenian churches and is considered one of the finest examples of 7th-century Armenian architecture.

Inside the church is the tomb of Saint Gayane. The church remains an important pilgrimage site for Armenian Christians.

Saint Gayane Church is also historically significant because it is connected with the establishment of Christianity in Armenia and the story of the country’s early Christian martyrs.
